It’s... Kind of a mixed bag.

The buildings it’s all in are super cool. S o that’s a good starter

But the museum itself feels too much like an ad for BMW, and one that has too much spin.

There’s a whole section painting BMW as a leader in electric cars, pointing at all sorts of concepts over the years and a heavy focus on the i brand. But it seems the i brand has sort of flopped, meandering for so many years and being constantly surpassed by competition. So much so that the ceo got ousted recently. The whole exhibition felt like smoke and mirrors - we aren’t doing well with electrification but we want you to think we are.

There’s also no mention at all of the X cars. Even ignoring the fact that the X5 was a pretty big “first” in the car industry as a luxury, road focused SUV, these cars aren’t something that can be ignored. They’re an integral part of BMW now, playing the old tune of “ultimate driving machine” just isn’t how the world is these days.

My last gripe is that BMW just hasn’t made that many interesting cars. At the Porsche museum I was thrilled to see all manner of road and race cars, the CGT, 959, 918. Likewise at Mercedes there was a whole series of gullwing cars on show and gems like the clk gtr. BMW has: the M1. Other than that its just 3 series after 3 series, 5 series after 5 series for decades. The Z cars seem to consistently fail to deliver though the Z1 and Z8 were pretty cool. But generally I was left wanting when it comes to cool rare things to ogle.

Anyway on to some pics

Despite my negativity, the M1 was a real treat

The history of the electric car as doctored by BMW. Note that most BMWs shown aren’t production vehicles, and other notable vehicles like the model s apparently don’t exist

I totally agree, the museum is kinda “meh”, and frankly didn’t change at all since the very first time i was there around 2010.

Hope you did the factory tour also, its really nice

It would be neat if the aftermarket made a glass hatch for the i3 like the concept.

I did the factory tour but didn't make the museum since I had a train to catch.

I did not. A car factory doesn’t sound that interesting.

Of course I have no idea really
